Standing Firm in Our One True God ... Unpacking 1 Corinthians 8:4

Greetings,

Standing Firm in Our One True God

“So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that ‘An idol is nothing at all in the world’ and that ‘There is no God but one.’” — 1 Corinthians 8:4

1 Corinthians 8:4

Unpacking 1 Corinthians 8:4

1 Corinthians 8:4 is a profound verse that addresses both theological truths and practical Christian living. It emerges from a discussion in the early church about eating food that had been offered to idols—a common practice in Corinth and many ancient cities with polytheistic cultures. The Apostle Paul uses this issue to emphasize the supremacy of God and the responsibility believers have toward one another.

At its core, this verse affirms the Christian belief in monotheism. "An idol is nothing at all in the world" underscores the futility and emptiness of idols. They are lifeless, man-made constructs with no real spiritual power. Paul is not merely dismissing idols as irrelevant; he is pointing believers to the ultimate reality: there is only one God. This truth was revolutionary in a culture steeped in idol worship and polytheism. By affirming that "there is no God but one," Paul is echoing the Shema, a central declaration of the Jewish faith found in Deuteronomy 6:4: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one."

This teaching would have been liberating for early Christians who might have struggled with fear or uncertainty regarding pagan practices. Paul’s assurance that idols are nothing reinforces the sovereignty of God over all creation. It gives believers the confidence to live without fear of false gods or spiritual forces tied to idolatry.

However, the theological truth of this verse does not stand in isolation. Paul weaves it into a larger discussion about love, community, and the conscience of others. While idols may have no power, the cultural and spiritual implications of participating in practices associated with them could impact others' faith. In this way, the verse bridges knowledge and responsibility. Knowing that idols are nothing might free one person to eat such food without guilt, but another believer, who might not fully grasp this truth, could stumble as a result. Paul later develops this idea, stressing that love must guide knowledge and freedom.

This verse also speaks to the enduring relevance of idolatry in our modern world. While physical idols might not dominate our culture, the human heart is still prone to create its own idols. Material wealth, success, relationships, and even personal achievements can become “idols” when they take the place of God in our lives. By affirming the reality that "there is no God but one," Paul calls believers to examine their hearts. Are there areas in life where we give undue allegiance or devotion? What false “gods” might we need to surrender to live fully for the one true God?

Paul’s teaching also challenges us to consider how our actions affect others. Just as eating food sacrificed to idols could cause confusion or harm in the early church, our modern freedoms can also impact those around us. Whether it’s our choices in entertainment, speech, or lifestyle, we are called to act with love and sensitivity toward others’ spiritual growth. This is a reminder that Christian freedom is not an end in itself but a means to glorify God and build up His church.

Finally, this verse points us to the ultimate question of worship. Worshiping the one true God is not simply about rejecting idols; it’s about embracing a relationship with Him. Worship involves the heart, mind, and actions aligning with God’s truth. When we truly grasp that “there is no God but one,” it transforms how we live, think, and interact with the world. This truth invites us into a life of deeper trust, surrender, and joy in the presence of the only God who is worthy of our devotion.

In reflecting on this passage, we are reminded that theology is not just about abstract concepts but about practical living. Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 8:4 challenge us to align our lives with the truth of God’s supremacy, to live in love toward others, and to keep our worship centered on the one true God. These principles are as relevant today as they were in the early church, calling us to live in freedom and responsibility, always pointing to the glory of the God who reigns over all.

Closing thoughts as I pray for those reading or hearing this verse today...

This verse teaches profound truths about God’s sovereignty, the futility of idolatry, and the balance between Christian freedom and responsibility.

It invites us to examine our hearts, grow in love for others, and live in a way that glorifies the one true God.

Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians remind us of an essential truth: there is only one God, and He alone deserves our worship and devotion. In a world filled with distractions and competing allegiances, we must remember that these "idols" hold no real power.

Strengthen your heart in knowing that the God you follow is the only true source of life, hope, and purpose.

Stand firm today, holding fast to the one true God who knows you and sustains you through every challenge.

Conservatively Trageting Liquidity Below Session Lows

Today, I’d like to share insights from a trade I placed early this morning in the light sweet crude oil market.

This session recap is geared toward retail traders looking to refine their approach and learn from real-market examples.

Let’s delve into the market context, the strategy employed, and key takeaways from this morning’s trade.

Understanding the Market Environment

As the day started, it was clear that crude oil was in a well-defined downtrend—a trend so apparent that even a novice trader would recognize it at a glance.

In this case, I was on the lookout for a short entry point that aligned with the broader trend, enabling me to target nearby liquidity pools and secure a quick profit.

The Setup and Strategy

My primary strategy for this morning was simple: identify a calculated entry point and aim for a modest, targeted move. Leveraging a substantial position allows me to benefit from these smaller price movements without needing the market to make large shifts.

chart

At 4:55 AM, I entered a short position. My entry was strategically timed, and I placed my stop just above the wick of the candle at $71.35 to manage risk effectively.

The target was set at $71.10, where a pocket of liquidity awaited. This move was based on the observation of light liquidity just above $71, which suggested the market could push down to tap into this area before any significant reversal.

Trade Execution and Outcome

The trade played out smoothly over a span of about 20 minutes. After entering at $71.35, the market showed no significant pushback towards my stop.

The price action was in line with my expectations, displaying minor wicks before rolling over and progressing downward.

The market pushed through the low and reached my target at $71.10, tapping into the expected liquidity zone.

Although the heavier liquidity was at the $71 level, I opted to close the trade at $71.10 to ensure I captured my gains without unnecessary risk.

profit

Sometimes, it’s best to secure profits early, especially when there is a possibility of a partial fulfillment without reaching deeper targets.

The trade was smooth and executed with minimal exposure, clocking only 20 minutes in total. This short duration of exposure is ideal as it limits.

Reflections on Trading Discipline

Reflecting on yesterday's session, I recognized that I had taken a more aggressive approach than usual, attempting to recover early losses.

While I managed to come back from those losses, the experience served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining discipline and sticking to a conservative strategy when conditions require it.

Today, I recalibrated my mindset and focused on trading conservatively. The result was a clear, disciplined trade with a defined edge.

This approach is crucial because even the most well-thought-out excuses for overtrading are ultimately invalid.

Why Edge Matters in Trading

The most important takeaway for any trader is the importance of having a statistically proven edge. An edge is the core principle that should guide every trading decision.

When you have a defined edge and apply it consistently, profitability follows over time.

It’s not about the outcome of a single trade but rather the cumulative effect of executing your edge repeatedly.

With increased confidence comes the ability to gradually scale your position size, allowing you to maximize returns on predictable market moves.

Start small, manage your risk, and progressively increase your size as you become more comfortable with your strategy’s reliability.

Closing Thoughts

By focusing on small, calculated moves and adhering to my trading plan, I was able to achieve my daily target without unnecessary exposure.

Remember, trading is about consistent application and risk management. If you do this well, you can steadily extract profits from the market.
